The IHRA was founded by Larry Carrier, owner of Bristol Dragway, in 1971. Carrier had disagreements with officials for both the NHRA and AHRA, leaving him with no viable option for national sanction for 1971. His solution was to start the IHRA. Three dragstrips participated in the first year of the IHRA: Bristol, Rockingham, and Lakeland (now defunct). Carrier was an agressive and competent leader and businessman, and the IHRA grew rapidly, until it displaced the AHRA as the second largest sanctioning body in North America.

Carrier sold the IHRA in 1987, repurchasing it after the new owner failed in one years time. He sold the IHRA again in 1997. The IHRA is now the property of Clear Channel Communications, a media and entertainment conglomerate.
