New Orleans

New Orleans was the site of the Grand Prix du Mardi Gras, an IMSA street race held in 1991, 1992 and 1995. A 1.3-mile course close to the Mississippi river was used in 1991. In 1992 the course was moved to a 1.43-mile circuit around the Louisiana Superdome, which was again used in 1995.

Historical Note

The Grand Prix du Mardi Gras succumbed to problems that might have been expected in a downtown race held in June in Louisiana--spectators were put off by the heat, rain and humidity, and local businesses objected to the disruption caused by street closings. Moving the event to October for the last race made little difference.
